History of Woodbury, Minnesota

Woodbury, Minnesota, is a Washington County community in the eastern Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area. Its history traces the transformation of a farming township into a suburban, commercial and recreational center. According to the city’s historical account, settlers arrived in 1844, and the community organized as a township in 1858. Originally called Red Rock, it became Woodbury in 1859 after state lawmakers identified another Minnesota township with the same name. The new name honored Levi Woodbury of New Hampshire, a judge and public official who was a friend of the first town board chairman.

Woodbury’s early population included immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland and Denmark. Agriculture shaped the community before suburban development accelerated in the 1960s. In 1967, residents approved village incorporation and a mayor-council government, and the community developed its first comprehensive land-use plan. These milestones help explain the relationship between Woodbury’s agricultural heritage and its present-day neighborhoods, business districts, parks and public facilities.

For geographic context, an approximate map reference for Woodbury is 44.9239° N, 92.9594° W. Minnesota’s statewide latitude-longitude reference is approximately 45.7326° N, 93.9196° W. These are general geographic reference points, not property boundaries or street-address coordinates.

Its collections, research services and historic-property work help residents understand the families and agricultural landscape that preceded modern Woodbury.
